Now?” from his
new album The Next Day on the computer today, what a way begin after ten years! A friend of mine
on twitter told me something quite interesting how this song and another song
from the movie The Ice Storm called “I Can’t Read” have a similar if not the
same mellow tone as “Where Are We Now?”
There are some intriguing references and similarities that I also
noticed. One being that the cover art of The Next Day was a subvert of Heroes
which was back in 1977, not only that it looks similar to Pet Shop Boys Elysium
cover art, the square in the middle of the portrait. “I Can’t Read” the video was directed by Tim
Pope and Soft Cell was one of the bands he directed and if I’m not mistaken Marc
Almond liked the new single as well, but was sad he didn’t see it sooner or
something. Two is that “I Can’t Read”
and “Where Are We Now?”, have Bowie’s face in an oval shaped facial expression
like a mask. Another thing is that both videos have to do with surrealism and
expressionism art and a vintage or desolate and abandon them. Which will bring
to my next similarity I’ve noticed Bowie mentioned about “walking the dead” and
how Pet Shop Boys “Leaving” is a theme about a subject about being “dead and fading
away” and I’ve read Clare McCreesh’s blog about the similarities between
Bowie’s new single and Pet Shop Boys’ Elysium about how the two videos had a
black and white footage of Berlin. And it could be a high possibility that
Bowie referenced The Pet Shop Boys, in fact if that’s the case, that would be
really cool and astounding because they did collaborated with them for “Hallo
Spaceboy” and he is one of their inspirations. Not only that but if it was like "Leaving" and the "Where Are We Now?" on the same album, then it would be like a continuation on a journey of some sort. There’s also a photo of David
Bowie on the official Pet Shop Boys site, it reminded me of the Pandemonium
where Neil and Chris with the cubes for heads. I find this quite amazing! I’m
glad David Bowie is back with music, also really cool to start the New Year and his birthday! I think there's a tiny reference of "I'm With Stupid" on "Where Are We Now?" because of the heads being on some dummies body.

Authorized Biography of Soft Cell by Simon Tebbutt (full review)
I have finally completed this particular book today. I was
determined to finish this book before the month was up. I read a little bit
here and there. Since I started school, I was a bit busy focusing on homework
to enhance my writing and logic abilities. Speaking of, working on a paper for
class that's due in a couple of days and thought to finally do some blogging to warm me
up.
The cover is from the "Soul Inside" sessions, I really love this photo; very expressional. This biography of Soft Cell is an excellent brief but
detailed book of important facts and opinions of the artists’ views of music and
just being an artist in general by Simon Tebbutt. I was on a insanely, dramatic adventure of the
Soft Cell world seeing the sweet and bashful side of them; while on some parts
the raw and crazy side of them. It includes a lot of exclusive pictures of the
musicians and associates. The brilliance of the choices of words brought out
how bizarre the life of an artist was. Especially actually having direct quotes
from situations that were only mentioned but not thoroughly investigated by
human ears or the eyes of the Internet. But the tongue-in-cheek twist and turns this book have, you in for one insane roller coaster ride. You can honestly tell that Soft Cell
were one of the few real artists that really wanted to be seen as artists and
reveal how hard life can be especially struggling through so much at a young
age. Such occurrences like Dave Ball losing his dad at 17, same
thing happened to me at 19, or having the doubt of being famous or to the point
you explode at someone because they keep making accusations for nothing, or even
keep stating to retire. It’s hard when no one encourages you, especially after
going through so much. I didn’t even know Soft Cell’s third album The Art of
Falling Apart, Marc lost money and friends just to make the album. It seems
that this biography book was released before their last album was out because it wasn’t
mentioned. It only stopped at their third album. It can be difficult when you
want to establish an image for yourself. Knowing why their album art was unique
than mainstream artists because of rebellion of wanting your own style or what
depicts you personally. And this band was very emotional at what they did even
when Marc went from different bands back to back, it was an outlet to do things
that Soft Cell couldn’t produce as a whole. Ironically, the song that I play
constantly or played constantly “Tainted Love” was the bands shadow and
nightmare to the point it was considered “that song” or that song. Tebbutt gave intense biographical features from the rise and falling
apart of Soft Cell by using exclusive pieces from different materials and what
not. The sexual content wasn’t shocking because that was the Soft Cell image at
the time and whatever that was left from the band. This is another piece or
something extremely rare that obviously the musicians have changed and so on, but this is a glimpse of the life of this band. I mean I didn’t even know they
were in Spain and at the time “Bedsitter” was more popular than “Tainted Love” or
Phil Oakey of Human League stated this “Marc Almond has got a twenty times
better voice than mine.” Or when Marc was talking about how musicians slag his
voice but this quote really was deep,” I have been told by classically trained
singers that I have an exceptional range.
And I’m getting better all the time. I listen to all the singers who slag
me off and I can tell by the way they are singing that they are doing it all
wrong. They’re singing from their throats and wallets, not their hearts and
souls at all.” Both quotes are on page 122. That’s truly a deep quote and
that’s how an artists should be, thinking about the heart and soul and not
money and being pretentious. I am truly fortunate to have this as a gift. I
can’t seriously thank you enough Elaine! I have six books to go, I’ll get a
move on another book but this time it’s the unauthorized biography of the Pet
Shop Boys and it will be a post about that one too, so stay tuned! I know this
biography book is rare and harder to find but if you come across this book, if
you love different, unique, raw, organic, sexual related stuff and hard working
and real true artists, then this book is definitely for keeps! I truly
apologize for the repetition but this book really moved me.

My 6th year being a Soft Cell/Marc Almond fan anniversary post
August 2, 2006 was when I became an official Soft Cell fan.
Ironically it’s also my grandmother’s birthday she would have been 82 if she
were alive. At the time I was 13 going on 14 becoming a fan of Soft Cell. I was
unsure of what music choice I was into at the time. I was obsessed with P!nk at
one point, then listened to multiple artists from the 80’s and even classical
music; I still listen to these types of music by the way. But when I heard
“Tainted Love” for the first time, that I can think of, it was during between
June and July, I had the Music Choice channel on cable and “Tainted Love” going
off and I immediately wrote down the song and artists’ name before the song
went off. I was asking my mother, aunts and my grandparents have you heard of
the song. So far only my aunts and my mother heard of it. My mother showed me this really, really old
tape (I’ll add a photo of it) she liked the song when it came out and she
recorded it off the radio. You can tell it was old but it didn’t sound that bad
and somehow she managed to capture the full version of the song. Before I was
exposed with technology full on, I almost wore her tape. So I finally decided
to make CDs with “Tainted Love” and then the power of downloading and all, had
so many versions. Then my cousin, Dario bought me my first Soft Cell CD, which
was their compilation The Very Best of Soft Cell. At the time, I only thought “Tainted Love”
was their only hit or song really, I was so obsessed with it, like literately.
I mean every time the song played, they wondered where I was. Then I remembered
I printed out so many photos of Soft Cell to the point, I compiled a collage
jive book, my aunt called it, with photos, interviews, just about everything.
When I actually did more researches on them, I realized they had more songs to
be expected. Now I’ll be quite honest, I was actually afraid of what to listen
to because of the track titles. I honestly had no idea what I was about to get
myself into. I mean I never heard such track titles like “Sex Dwarf”,
“Bedsitter” or even “Entertain Me”. Then I checked out what “erotic” meant and
was nervous because at the time, I was intimidated with sexual stuff, but after
a while. I wanted to explore Soft Cell, regardless of what the case may be. I
heard bits from their first and second albums. Then when Tower Records was
still around, I begged my mother to buy me Soft Cell’s first album, she was mad
but she bought it anyway. I really like the album actually wore it out, it was
so full of scratches and then later on buying more of their albums, all went
terrible until I downloaded their tracks and then when those were deleted on my
grandmother’s computer. I finally managed to get them recently thanks to Amoeba
Music. Actually because of Soft Cell, it opened doors for me when It came to
music. I started reading articles that I printed out and seeing bands like Pet
Shop Boys, Bronski Beat, Human League, etc, I soon later became interested into
the bands and there are more I need to explore like Kraftwerk, and so on. I
didn’t even know at the time Neil Tennant was part of the Pet Shop Boys since
there was an article where he claimed “If it wasn’t for Soft Cell, there
wouldn’t be no Pet Shop Boys, Soft Cell realized we could form a group.” It was
amazing how bigger artists and bands had so much to say about this band and
especially being America too. I was quite astounded. My adoration went even further with them in
middle school where people at school told me I liked a gay band, I should
listen to rap, or they don’t know you exist and all that stuff. I couldn’t stop
listening to Soft Cell, their lyrics really spoke out to me. So I had folders
where I spelled out the name and the band mate’s names throughout my items.
Then even used some of the photos I had into clear slots, where I would flash
out Soft Cell pictures and stuff. What was so funny, at the time I still
remembered walking around with the Soft Cell scrapbook with me to school at the
time. Even someone gotten me into trouble because I had an almost nude photo of
Marc Almond that I gave to someone, they wanted to keep it after class. I
actually thought the person was a fan, but it turned out she was only doing it
for a mere friendship. She told me she had photos of Marc Almond that were “rare”
which were common photos I already seen. Told me innumerous lies about Soft
Cell were with mainstream artists and all that. Soft Cell only around briefly
in the 2000s and there was no way they would be around any mainstream artist,
not that I know of. Even this dude was gay and still mocked me for liking them.
It was crazy at my middle school year. I remember this one girl told me that
Rihanna actually sampled the track for her song “S.O.S.” song and guess what,
it was a big hit, not really a shocker because the song is still popular to
this day. I don’t care if it was a big hit, I love the song regardless of what
people have to say. Even yesterday my neighbor across from the apartment, had a
movie playing and I heard “Tainted Love” which was bizarre because my fan
anniversary was very soon and then by finding Bedsit Tapes, I was so excited.
But going back to fans, I did meet a hand full of fans. One that so into them, he was younger than
me, but later stopped liking them because of the gay thing, which, I’m thinking
you just now realized that? I knew Marc Almond was gay, I used to think Dave
Ball was his partner but after reading, I immediately gotten that out of my
system. What angered me was that the fan have so much rare items of them it was
crazy. He never gotten back to me about it, but it’s fine the technology is so
advance it’s possible to retrieve. I met this other nut from South America; I don’t
know what his issue was honestly. He was a fan of Soft Cell and the Pet Shop
Boys, he seems popular with YouTube, I think that’s also how I took an interest
on them too. All I can was that he called me a stupid black girl in Spanish
then few months later talking to the previous fan I mentioned and claiming he
wasn’t a racist. As if I would believe that. He sketched and all, his art was
alright, but he needed improvement. All this was on MySpace and messenger by
the way. Then I found out karma had him when he made that animal cruelty video
using a Marc Almond song and Marc hated that. Hell he probably hated me too
because I mentioned Soft Cell or something, but I am an American fan, I didn’t
know anything at the time. Actually I came across a few of Marc’s associates,
then to find out he doesn’t want to do with them anymore, for some odd reason.
But not all fans were assholes or changed because of ridiculous reasons. I met
others who didn’t want to do anything with me, jut because they were stuck up
fans and all that. I did; however, met some awesome fan friends: Yvonne Moore,
Elaine Darvas, and Jacqueline. I would say more but I found out they were
nutcases looking for attention like the Pet Shop Boys fans I met on Facebook. I
honestly don’t understand the whole superior thing, but they will learn one
day. Anyway, so far I stayed in touch with those Marc Almond fans, our
friendship never really faded out. I met a few more that were nice or decent
but I kept my distances only because I don't want any ruckus with anybody. It was quite a war, even then no matter what superior
fans want to think, if it came from the horses’ mouth, then there’s nothing
more to say. I still love Soft Cell, even Marc Almond’s solo work and
collaborations. I don’t know what made me really drawn to the music, but I
really adore their way of thinking and they were unique and weren’t afraid to
be artists. I must say I’m a proud fan of them and it will take a lot to get me
off of them. Then by getting awesome gifts lately, it really had it in my mind;
that it was fate that I would be into this band. I’m not sure on what date I
became a pethead but I will post about it around my birthday. Don’t worry I have no hatred on fans, I’m only
pointed out what happened during the years. I would like to continue meeting
awesome fans. Overall I didn't have that much trouble with the fans rather than the Pet Shop Boys fans.

My Soft Cell/Marc Almond collection as of May 18, 2012
This is my Soft Cell/Marc Almond collection as of now, and like the PSB collection, some fans sent me items, so I'm not stealing credit from no one! Reason you see more than one photo because since my collections grew, they needed more photos, and I also tried to put them in chronological order too. My reasons for the Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret quadriple is because that all of these have different facts and descriptions and some with photos I would like to keep, if they were exactly the same with info, I would have sold them too. I still need to get a chance to read all the books for both artists, it will be awhile on account I'm still in school.
I do have fan art but I haven't added them yet but they are on my other art blog, well most of them anyway.
Most of these will be decors for my room like the vinyls and the Chris Lowe poster. I always mention to people that a collection signifies a person. It's obvious my collection is more on the art side, since I am an artist, you can tell that this is why my collection is the way it is. I'm not just buying items, nor do I worship them!

Marc Almond - Glamerama (Part 1 of 2) art review
Marc Almond in Glamerama
I don’t really know much about this or there’s fact on the American site for this. I can tell you what I know what people told me about it. This is a rare segment of art during Marc Almond’s college years in Leeds Polytechnic in 1978. It does consist of narration but silent acting and body gestures, so you would have to depict what is trying to be conveyed here of Marc and his friends. You can also see that on the credits, Marc’s name was Mark. He gotten legally changed later on, because one he love Marc Bolan, one of his idols (was with Gloria Jones, the original singer to “Tainted Love”) and then he didn’t want nothing to remind him of his father. The two scenes you see Marc in are basically abstract and surreal in a way. Marc and a woman are slurping on what appears to be a bong or something like it, the music is very fascinating makes you wonder if Art of Noise had a soundtrack to it. The next seen you would see Marc in some woman bondage and squirting liquid on a woman that looks like he was in a hypnotic trance. You probably wonder how Soft Cell gotten their music video art ideas from. You would also see from break periods of the footage where you seen magazine, comic book scraps of women and men, and different colors of art. I would say it could be Pop and Op art since it was already at it’s peak since this was the mid to 70’s here. It’s bizarre but that’s how art can be sometimes, I would definitely watch it, if you’re a Marc Almond/Soft Cell fan and love art. Thankfully the youtuber didn’t delete it, because this is really rare, I don’t know what it’s really about, but I do know it’s art and the title does speak for itself. He only appears in two scenes of this. And if you wonder why Marc pranced about in the 80’s then look no further! If you're the lucky person that have this, cherish it! I would love to own this item one day.

Marc Almond makes Mince Pies
Marc Almond makes Mince Pies
I have been wanting to see this for quite a while, I saw an excerpt from a clip about Soft Cell, and it was said they were the only band that were at their game and having an appearance from a cooking show, I thought that was so cool! It’s like making history. Again, some like to throw away this band but they are worth it, if you like raw, organic art. If not, then it’s not your type of music of course.
This was taken place called Riverside (almost funny because my previous college was called University of California Riverside, I thought it was awesome!) Anyway, this was back in 1983. Marc Almond and the hostess were making mince pies. Marc was a bit nervous because he never done things like that before. He seems to know what he was doing because it seems like he knew what to do. I love his sweater, very artsy. I think he wanted it off because he was cooking and it was probably hot in the studio and then the hostess took it off of him I guess he doesn’t want to get fuzz from the sweater mixed with the dough mix, smart move I think! It’s quite nice to see things like this, it reveals that Marc has a soft side and he can do other things in the art world. The music sounded like a 60’s show or something. They also had made cakes that look magnificent almost should be in a float and added their creativeness to it. It’s one of Marc’s happiest moments I bet. I guess when Marc doesn’t perform, he can be nervous because that’s out of his element, it was said once before that when he sings he feels different, but other than that, he’s quite nervous. He got better over the years though. This was also during Christmas time as well, it was hilarious he was wearing all black, but that’s Marc for you!
All credit for the upload was Kevm1986, and was glad he gave me permission to post this up and discuss it. I like seeing things like that with artist, now there are probably other artists that done these type of things but I heard it on a video that he was only one that did that and was a big pop star. It goes to prove that not all artists are in for the fame. Thank you again Kevm1986!!

T-Total Ft. Marc Almond - Baby's on Fire art review
This video got art written all over it, from comic book art and a modern version of Pop Art and optical illusion. Not only that but also a neat contrast between color and black and white. I also like the fact the outfit Marc wears matches a lot of the pop out and moving words, and even have the words “Baby’s On Fire” even the band T-Total were matching. The part where Marc says “the photographers snip snap, you hear camera noises, it reminded immediately the audio clean version of Soft Cell’s “Sex Dwarf” when he stated get my little camera take a pretty picture, you also hear noises of a camera. I did noticed how Marc isn’t like he used to be on the camera, moving all over the place, I mean he still does it, and you can’t argue that this video he does, but it’s not like a prancing motion, it’s more structured and mature, but he does more of acting gestures in this video. The objects moving every which way in the video also kind of reminded me of La Roux’s “Bulletproof” video in an odd way, then again it’s the UK, but I like the effects it have; especially when Marc sings and certain key words would pop up. The dominant colors in the video are red, white and blue, black, white and pink, there’s more colors of course but those were the dominant ones I saw. The effects of the noises were fascinating, was it suppose to be a woman in agony or something, I mean henceforth the title. At first, I thought it was about an infant being on fire, with Marc, it’s pretty unpredictable, but then after I thought about a woman and it made more sense, talking about being melancholy. I personally love this video, one of Marc’s best work in the 2000’s shows that he is still vibrant and hanging in there. This video is also vintage because of certain parts Marc looks all comic book like with all the dots, something Lichtenstein based and then the microphone he uses as vintage like the one in Soft Cell’s “Torch” video. So in other words this video is worth watching, if you haven’t seen it! Also it really feels like a continuation of Soft Cell’s “What” video because of the several art references and a hint of “A Lover Spurned” too and the lyrics are pretty comical.

A little update!
After going through some minor issues, a fan friend texted me about Record Store Day and she was looking for High Contrast by Logistics on vinyl and another band called London Electricity, unfortunately they didn't have it over here and usually Amoeba would have a good source of rarities. The clerk even told me they didn't have it but had everything else of theirs, the lines were packed like crazy. Lord knows I tried! Anyway, I came across these items, the two above me Essential and The Maxi-CD Collection of the Pet Shop Boys are limited/out of print items and boy it was another smashing moment, it guess it was good karma because I helped a friend out and then by chance had these items. The Soft Cell/Marc Almond CDs are pretty common, I did own the Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret with the blue outline before but it was all scratched up and I finally gotten another copy there's a description in there that I like so I thought why not get it again, I can't find the original one I have, so I have four versions of Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret. The Idol looked artsy and there's two live versions of two songs I like from Marc Almond which is pretty cool to get, they did have other material but I have them or I haven't test the album yet, Marc Almond wise. I'm really excited I own these, never thought I see the day I find valuables such as these!!

My art review on Marc Almond's The End of New York.
artwork by Scott Ewalt
artwork by Hanni Balzer
I recently
checked out Marc Almond’s End of New York. It is a series of poems, lyrics, and
prose from the 80’s and 90’s of his view of New York that was published in March of 2001, I was updated by a fan, thanks again. I
noticed that there’s a couple of major, distinctions between the readings from
the CD and the book itself: There’s a reading of “The Puerto Rican Go Go Boy”
in the CD that’s not in the book, and a lot of the wordings were either omitted
or inserted by Marc himself, but there’s a photo with the same title, it’s an
art piece by Scott Ewalt, but there is “The Lonely Go Go Dancer”, but it wasn’t
read. I personally was confused that he only read about 75% of his work and
then left the rest unread. However it is a nice piece of art and liked his
perspective of New York. I also like how there was two Soft Cell songs that were
used: One was read which was “Baby Doll” it had another feel to it compared to
how it was released in 1983, but it was equally erotic and the other was "L’Esqualita" which wasn’t read but it did have a small fact Marc pointed out,
“L’Esqualita is the name of the Puerto Rican drag club in New York. I first
visited the club in 1982 and it became one of my favorite places. When the drag
artists performed members of the audience would walk up to them and push
dollars down the front of their dresses.” End of New York, p.49. There’s also
photos that are in black and white that Marc took of people but wasn’t credited,
don’t understand why unless he was trying to be mysterious. I really love the rawness Marc provides for these pieces and organic, really telling it like it is. I do love the
artwork by Scott Ewalt, the usage of colors and people from abnormal heads and
shapes to the complicated structures of buildings. This item is out of print,
and was proud to finally get it, it was one of the items by Marc Almond I
wanted. I felt sorry for him when he was trying to get his fans into it, but
they all wanted to know about the latest album and when was it coming out. If I
was there, I would have asked what made him feel secure enough to have his some of his art
pieces released into a book and why did he left out some of his work. I knew from
reading previous facts that New York was actually his idealistic place to live,
but after 9/11, it was irrelevant and then too the accident few years later
that would change him altogether and found a new fascination that is Edinburgh, and shockingly enough Russia.(found this out on his twitter) it's interesting because Neil Tennant is into the Russian culture, he would definitely have someone to talk to about that now wouldn't he? Anyway, Also another piece of art remains not credited, which is the portrait of Marc as a
devil. I also wonder how his attitude was when his voice was recorded; what was
going on when he read them, did he feel different or felt the same after a
period of years. Maybe the word “ellipsis” probably meant something symbolic
such as to be continued or something like that. I also noticed how there’s a
similarity on the theme, there’s a photo of Marc as a devil but then too, the
cover of the photo have Marc’s head being almost dominant and then behind him
says the Angel of Death. This is something for either young adults or adults
that into the sleaze, drug, sex, violent, glamorous type of world that was and
probably still is New York. My thoughts might change over a period of time
about this, but as of now, it’s something I would get if you’re into art and
would to know more about an artist. Also I forgot to point out the musical Cats
the way Marc discuss about it seems very intriguing, I always wanted to see it
and now getting the idea of it, makes me want to see it more, but I don’t think
they will show it anytime soon. There’s was a bit of humor about it because
Marc says there were the only cats he wasn’t allergic to, even though some of
them were intoxicating. There is a remix album that shares the same title of
The End of New York but there were fifty limited editions that were given away
and some of the songs aren’t from the series too which was interesting. I’m
glad I just have the series of his art plus the audio CD. If my facts are off is because they don't have much for me to look at.
sources were from the book and

Dusty Springfield - Just Dusty Trailer(Pet Shop Boys/Marc Almond related)
A fan by the name of Maria Jesus told me about this trailer last month I think. It's basically a trailer about the DVD called Just Dusty about the life and legacy of Dusty Springfield along with collaborators and friends, etc. This also feature as you know Pet Shop Boys, and kind of surprising appearance of Marc Almond talking about Dusty. He did do a cover of one of her songs called "I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten" few years ago on his album Stardom Road.

Marc Almond with Andy Warhol photo
I find this photo so awesome knowing Marc Almond had a photo with Andy Warhol, such precious and fantastic memories an artist could have! There's one of Marc and Dave with Andy but I can't find it at the moment, will post when I can get to it. I love it when an artist of any medium get to see one of their inspirations!
