Pet Shop Boys at the Closing Ceremonies

Yesterday, multiple bands/artists like Pet Shop Boys, Madness, Beady Eye, Jessie J, Fatboy Slim, Spice Girls Annie Lennox,The Who, George Michael, many others along with tributes of John Lennon, David Bowie. Freddie Mercury; having choirs, marching bands and many other forms of art of the London culture. But one of the ones I really adore were the Pet Shop Boys, even though it was brief, I was finally glad to see them on something that was broadcasted on NBC, was absolutely grateful, because you barely hear anything of them on television unless it's a music channel. Sadly that's how America is with a lot of UK bands if they aren't in the legendary realm yet. You practically have to do a handful amount of research just to know where they are.
The first photo you see here, I saw this on tumblr, I don't know where it originates on a website but I do like pre photos meaning before the show the real deal. Apparently they are on rickshaws, I can actually hear "Chariots of Fire" going in my head when I see them on these for some odd reason. I guess because of the next photo to the right it look like an abstract version of fire or something. Actually what they were wearing and the colors, well to me obviously brought up something quite familiar from their previous material. Well they wore cone hats in the music video "Can You Forgive Her?"and ironically the dominant color would be orange because their album Very (lego casing) was primarily orange. Also the blue lighting in the background and the orange rickshaws/abstract head wear, that's another clue to me that it reminded me of the "Can You Forgive Her?" video because those two colors were very dominant in the video. If you also look closely on the photo even the background had triangles so it's like a three forms of triangular/pointy forms and shapes: the abstract heads, the cone hats and the triangles in the back! How artsy can you get?? Gareth Pugh are behind the outfits, the black jacket Neil wears looks quite similar to the one he wore in the Brit Awards(same one with Brandon Flowers and Lady Gaga) but the one Chris wears looks practically new and different. I am getting a sense of a black crow in their outfits. It would make sense because of Chris' outfit looks feathery and the cone hats for some reason, almost look like a beak or something. (I found out on a photo that someone used Chariot of Fire, on an article, I guess I rest my case when I thought about that then!!) Anyway, the closing ceremonies blew me away! So much talent and legends performing and newer generations keeping the balance. And thank God for DVRs I would have honestly missed it, if I didn't have one! I personally wished there were some more artists that would be in it, but I know because of time and all, it's understandable. I just remember in the "Can You Forgive Her?" video did have two species of bird: an ostrich and ducks. So in a way I can see where the bird reference came from a wee bit. I love how the people were doing the dance for "West End Girls"very unified! That song seriously will never get old. I forgot to mention this the suits the guys are wearing look like something from Tim Burton's Beetlejuice, because the main character Beetlejuice wears a suit with black and white stripes.

Pet Shop Boys - A Man Could Get Arrested (Original 7-inch Version) post

“A Man Could Get Arrested” is one of my favorite B-sides and funnily it’s the B-side to “West End Girls” The first time I heard this song, was when a fan was sending me songs since at the time I couldn’t afford to get CDs and things, but for the longest time, I never knew what the track was it didn’t have names. And them I was searching on YouTube on what the track was and finally found it. Out of all the versions of this particular track, I really love the 7’’ version. Ironically the 7’’ is longer than of the two versions.  And based on reading the sleeve notes from the Further Listening to Please, Chris pointed out the 7’’ has real drums, real bass and real brass section and Neil said the bass player of the Status Quo plays on the track. I didn’t even know that! I thought it was funny Chris said it sounded like a rip off of Shannon, because it does have that freestyle vibe. The 12’’ version is Bobby O’s version yet he didn’t finish it, but the Pet Shop Boys did.  What I really like is the lyrics behind it all. Based on Bobby O’s approach to life, sex frustration and Chris pointed out Neil nearly gotten arrested. It was also the first time they met Peter Andreas, according to Alternative. It’s a real eighties pop production by Steve Spiro. I honestly didn’t see the sex frustration until reading it, I actually thought it was a strong message meaning if you want to do something, do it now! Even the 7’’ version have female voices doing the chorus, it almost sound like it could be a soundtrack to a movie or something or at least a theme for a cartoon show.  They spent a week doing the 7’’ version, which is quite impressive! The title always reminded me about Soft Cell’s A Man Could Get Lost, which is about a man exploring the nightlife and having so much fun, he probably would get lost. I know the songs have two different meanings but the whole “A Man Could Get” line of the title sounds so similar it’s pretty funny, I think. I’m actually quite shocked it’s a B-side! A Man Could Get Arrested could have been an A-side but then that’s a lot of their B-sides and then vice versa. I do have the 12’’ vinyl of “West End Girls” with the 12inch B-side of the song, but I prefer the 7'', I also forgot to mention there's a female backing vocals her name is Margot Buchanan, but it seem she was uncredited somehow. I can't find her on the net, or tell if it's the right person, but I found her name on a site on where it tells you where the backing vocals of their songs.

Pet Shop Boys' Earlier work (experimental)

I still have more posts on drafts so you will see those very soon. These items you see before you, are quite rare at the same time early Pet Shop Boys work as in experimental. I love this era or short period where they work with Bobby O or Bobby Orlando. It's pretty much "Pet Shop Boys", "West End Girls (original)", "Theme for the Pet Shop Boys","One More Chance"and "Sunglasses At Night" and the combination of the few as one megamix. One from Epic Records and the other two below are Zyx Records. The top one is the 12 inch of the original "West End Girls" and "Pet Shop Boys." Also the photos of the Boys are done by Eric Watson. The four disc CD set is the Maxi CD set which have the songs "Pet Shop Boys", "West End Girls (original)", "Theme for the Pet Shop Boys","One More Chance"and "Sunglasses At Night" and the remixes were done in 86'/88' The Ultimate Mix have these songs too minus "Pet Shop Boys" and "Theme for the Pet Shop Boys" which are sounds and one sounding like an instrumental riff of "West End Girls" I just love the sounds of Maxi CD single because they give me an idea of how Kraftwerk would be even though they are way more experimental since they made their own machines. This is also the Boys raw creative side of them minus their later experimental work and then by working with Bobby O just really makes it exciting. They don't sound like this now of course because of changes in music genres and favorites through the years but in all honesty I really do appreciate this short period. I love the strange and bizarre if you like this type of music I would suggest give it a listen. You can't find these anywhere on youtube but except a few but here's one: Theme For the Pet Shop Boys << this you hear Pet Shop Boys being said but this is the one that have the riff of "West End Girls".

Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls (live) 1991 [HD]

"West End Girls"

Now this here is pure acting at it's best here! It's very comedic and how it starts off music wise sounded like animated car horns or an animated version of "West End Girls" You have some dark red lighting almost like the street lights at night, and they were positioned too reminded me immediately of Los Angeles. You have Chris throwing a chair on the stage which as indicate he's drunk, also notice how he's wearing some of his clothes from the previous number. I like how he really look like an actual drunk, almost mistaken by an actor really. I also notice the dancers from the last number also are wearing the same thing, I like how they approach Chris with the chairs, it seems like they are turning their backs on him in a way and since he's used up, no one wants him. He's reading a magazine which Chris points out he's reading again, I thought that was funny. One of the dancers gave him a bottle of sherry wine. It's usually alcohol or beer mainly but seeing wine was very interesting and very proper I think, Because over here, it would be cheap liquor. If this is the same sherry glass or wine, I know Marc Almond and I think Dave Ball love sherry too, I remember watching Non Stop Exotic Video Show and you see them drinking sherry. Wine I would expect like a drunk couple or something but this was even funnier. Neil looks to be like a report revealing what's going on stage basically or commenting on the action. When Neil mentioned "like a Greek chorus," it reminded me when I had to do an English report to do with tragedy and one of them I did was Oedipus Rex and one of the vocabulary words were Greek chorus, If I'm not mistaken based on my memory a Greek chorus were like revealing what is going on in tragedies like angels or something in the midst, so that was a good comparison there what he said. I find it funny, I haven't read Greek tragedies since high school. Anyway, you see Chris trying to pick up a fight with one of the dancers and then you see the female dancers walking around the male dancers like some prostitute or hooker and they get paid. Now this is definitely signify "West End Girls" in this scene and the lyrics as well. Especially adding the 10" mix lyrics which I also like and wish they sing that bit more often. I like this version of "West End Girls" and MCMLXXXIX version of "West End Girls" because something about them is very soulful. Usually when a female get paid they show off in public like nothing never happened and then behind closed doors is a different story. Now you see one where is trying to allure Chris up out of the chair they dance and then usually how those end is when the drunk person gets horny or turned on and they puff them off because they have to keep up appearances of course. I like the background it looks like a building and the way it looks with the small lights very animated. Then you see the female dancer looking like "you must be joking" and Chris is like "whatever" movement wise. Then you see another dancer appears to be "easy" or "fast" because she would be with anyone kind of person. Then you have another one sitting in a chair near Neil and smothering herself with the money she collected. They mentioned about how Chris is wearing his socks and Chris Heath pointed that you never really leave school. I have to agree even when you think about it, actors, dancers, etc. are the "students" and the high rank authorities are like the "teachers" only difference is that you are making profit rather than just being a student. So the scenario of school never really leaves with life, so that was a very good symbolism even if it was usage of Chris' socks. The same dancer with the money she's seducing another prey with her body and so on and I think the others will follow. Then you have Sylvia with the mink or fur with her green dress, I have to say that really fits well with her, I would think that she portrayed one of those women that succeeded in taking money from people. Chris really looks like he's out of it on that bit too, quite believing! Chris also pointed out where the streets have no name right after Neil stated "Watch them play a different game where no one knows your name.." It does have some kind of connection the previous song but negatively. The way Sylvia, Pam, and Derek are around Chris makes it seem that they are his last hopes of living, where Neil's character could have helped Chris' character but I guess not and just getting at Chris. Then you have the "easy" dancer she plops on Chris and then moves away and then Chris looks turned on again and comes after her. I think they are called floozy I think, and then she lets him try her and then gets rejected so much that he fell. That fall was exaggerated and silly at the same time, It's actually something I would do in a drama class. She now takes his newspaper, I have no idea why, maybe pretending it's money I guess and then drops it all over the place. Now you see the dancers doing what they do best keeping up appearances so no one would see how they really are. Then you see Chris picking them up and you know he was quite angry enough to go on a rampage: he balled up the papers and through the wine bottle and lifted up the chair too! I wonder why there was no shatter noises of the glass, it would be funny if they had it, but where did it go? If it did smash, then how in the world they didn't get cut on their feet knowing shards of glass would be there is simply amazing. Now you see Chris just kicking and boy he's mad, They should do some more acting! I think the dancers are now used up Chris and soaked up what's left of him and left him for dead really. It was like they were good before and then now it's like they never exist. I feel for Chris' character in some cases, where I too, feel like that at the moment by some people. That lyric line "Watch them play a different game, where no one knows your name" goes quite well in this scene. Because they pretend not to know Chris at all and they are continuing having a ball and he's pretty much left to die. Now I have a solution of the fake throwing up or puke or barfing. Instead of using the vegetable soup trick that Neil points out which isn't a bad idea but cleaning it up would be another task. If they had rubber or fake vomit, which I see in joke store or stores that sell prank merchandising, that rubber or plastic throw up would be helpful for Chris' barfing, and they have to do is pick it up and that's it. No cleaning involved. Real vomit, I wouldn't suggest, it would work wonders but the stench would be too great and people probably have sensitive noses or would get dizzy or irritable with the smell. And now you see the dancers pointing fingers at Chris which mean that "we don't need you anymore, you're a has been" type of thing. Even one of them came back to Chris but only to insult him and laughed and walked away. It's tragic but that's how that type of life is, so don't be the prey and you have Chris continuing to barf. I like one of the bits where Scott Davidson and JJ Belle can be scene for a brief moment to let them know who's playing behind there. I personally love the song, and the video but this portrayal of "West End Girls" really signify the song I believe.
